Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Poland, a thriving cultural and academic centre. The city is located at the foot of the Sudety Mountains – in the centre of the Silesian Valley, on the Oder River, with numerous canals and five smaller rivers. The characteristic aspects of Wroclaw’s scenery are islands (12) and bridges (112): Wrocław is often referred to as the Polish Venice. The total length of the rivers flowing through Wrocław is 107.4 kilometres.
Wrocław is the fourth largest city in Poland with a combined area of 293 square km and is inhabited by about 650 thousand people. It is one of the countries largest university centres. The academic life centres on the colleges with the university and polytechnics at the helm. Guests remember Wroclaw predominantly as a thriving cultural centre. Theatres, cinemas, among which are two large multiplex cinemas, an opera, a Philharmonic, and numerous music clubs, museums and galleries guarantee a continuous dose of artistic events. Musical festivals of international importance have become the cultural hallmark of the city. One of the largest is the International Wratislavia Cantas festival – Music and Art.
Wrocław is a city of youth and students. We have 26 colleges (13 state and 13 non-state) educating more than 120 thousand students.
It is also a very important in terms of its infrastructure; 3 international roads run through Wrocław, there are 2 large train stations, 2 river ports and an international airport, which guarantees connections to the whole world. Wrocław’s public transport system consists of 54 day and 11 night buses as well as 23 day and 10 night tram lines. The combined length of bus routes within the city borders is 324.85 kilometres, and the tram – 84.02 kilometres.
The city is equipped with sport and recreation facilities for practicing professional and amateur sports. Wroclaw is the centre of water sports and river tourism; it is also known for its basketball traditions, speedway racing, football and shooting. Meticulously maintained parks and a constantly growing number of bicycle paths encourage active leisure.
One of the advantages of Wroclaw is the vicinity and easy access to health and sport centres located in Kotlina Kłodzka and in the area of the Sudety and Karkonosze mountains. This widens the range of active leisure activities and satisfies the needs of enthusiasts of extreme sports (mountain climbing, exploration of mines and shafts) Wroclaw is a beautiful city rich with history and unique charm appreciated by both the residents as well as the guests.
