Candidates holding a foreign secondary school certificate

Candidates for the undergraduate and graduate programs (BA and MA programs) who have a foreign secondary school certificate are to submit all the documents required by the regulations along with a sworn translation, however:
  1. If there is an international agreement between Poland and the country in question concerning the equivalency of educational documents:


      •  The secondary school certificate should be should be affixed with an apostille (in case of documents issued by an institution functioning in an educational system of a country which a party to the Convention (The Hague, October 5, 1961 nr Dz. U. from 2005 Nr 112, position 938 and 939), which lifts the requirement to legalize foreign legal documents, or
      • The secondary school certificate should be legalized, i.e. confirmed by a Polish consul in the country where the diploma was issued.


  2. If there is no international agreement or it is not in effect, then the diploma should undergo a nostrification procedure which takes place in the local Board of Education (Kuratorium Oświaty) of the applicant’s place of residence or - in the event that no such institution exists there – in the Board of Education proper to the school where the applicant wishes to submit the certificate (in the case of WSF, it is Dolnośląskie Kuratorium Oświaty, Wrocław, pl. Powstańców Warszawy 1) The nostrification procedure is carried out on the basis of the Regulation issued on April 6, 2006 by the Minister of Education and Science on the Nostrification of School Certificates and Maturity Certificates Obtained Abroad.

Attention: When submitting application documents in all of the aforementioned cases, a sworn translation into Polish must be attached (as well as translation apostille or legalization, if required).

Nostrification of the maturity certificate:

When applying for nostrification, you should submit to the Board of Education the following:

  1. Application for nostrification (download here ->);
  2. Original or copy of the certificate obtained abroad legalized or affixed by apostille;
  3. A statement claiming that the certificate has never undergone nostrification in Poland;
  4. Confirmation that the certificate grants the candidate the right to apply to all kinds of schools of higher education (if there is no such annotation on the certificate); this kind confirmation can be issued by the education authorities of the country which had issued the certificate, or it can be accredited in Poland by the diplomatic authorities or consul of the country in whose educational system the certificate in question was issued; or by a Polish consul functioning in the country whose educational system issued the certificate;
  5. A sworn translation into Polish of the certificate along with the abovementioned certificates (if it was written in a foreign language).
